Los Angeles, CA – California State Senate President pro Tempore Emeritus Kevin de León today announced his plans to run for Los Angeles City Council in 2020, to represent the 14th District. He released the following statement:

“In early November, I made a commitment to my fellow Democrats, Angelenos, and Californians that I would continue on a path of public service, to focus on building coalitions in our communities to achieve our common goals. Today, I am fulfilling that promise by announcing my candidacy for the Los Angeles City Council.

“It was the honor of my life to serve the people of Los Angeles in the State Legislature for the last decade. Together we fought for hardworking families, cleaned up our air, secured billions of dollars to fix our roads, worked to alleviate the housing crisis, built countless parks and green spaces, passed historic public safety measures, helped make the first year of community college free for Californians, and doubled down on our efforts to reduce gun violence in our neighborhoods.

“But we still have work to do. The Fourteenth District needs a leader who can leverage relationships with state and federal partners to make sure our city is building homes for Angelenos experiencing homelessness, keeping our air clean, and reducing traffic and commute times. We need to focus on making sure our children can go to good schools; that our teachers continue to receive fair treatment; and that our city is a safe place for families to live, work, and play.

“All Angelenos living in CD 14 – from Eagle Rock to Boyle Heights, from El Sereno to Ramona Gardens to Downtown LA – deserve a seat at the table in their City Council; a voice that represents their values and their needs. Those who know me understand that when it comes to the challenges facing our community, I won’t back down. To the Angelenos who don’t know me yet – I look forward to earning your support.”
