Kevin de León First on the Ballot in the City of Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA –Election officials with the City of Los Angeles have counted and approved the signatures necessary for Kevin de León to be listed on the ballot in City Council District 14. His campaign is the first to qualify for the ballot in the city of Los Angeles, having collected signatures from community members and supporters throughout the district in less than a week. The former California Senate Leader released the following statement:

“It is humbling to see the outpouring of support from so many families in this incredibly vibrant district, and I am honored to be on the 2020 ballot.

“Over the last few days, we spent countless hours knocking on doors, collecting signatures, and hearing from voters. Families are concerned about how their elected leaders will address a burgeoning homelessness and housing affordability crisis unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Hardworking parents are frustrated about having to sit in endless hours of traffic when they should be spending that time with their families. Children are missing precious days of school because our air isn’t as clean as it should be. We have an opportunity with this election to drive transformative change for our community, and improve our quality of life.

“I’m looking forward to hearing from voters in the coming months, and working together on the kinds of solutions that unite our community and lead our city into the brightest possible future.”

In the course of a remarkable career, Kevin de León has been an educator, planned one of the largest civil rights marches in California history, and became the first Latino leader of the California State Senate in 130 years. For the last decade, de León represented Senate District 24, which overlaps a significant portion of City Council District 14.

Currently, he is a professor, senior analyst, and distinguished policymaker-in-residence at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs; as well as a Distinguished Fellow for Climate, Environmental Justice and Health with the USC Schwarzenegger Instituted at the University of Southern California.

As Senate Leader, he secured more than $68 million to revitalize the Los Angeles River, $176 million to clean up toxic waste around the former Exide Technologies facility, funding for more than a dozen new parks, and $26 million to complete the Los Angeles State Historic Park.

He appropriated tens of millions of dollars to make Los Angeles schools more energy-efficient through Prop 39, bringing relief to city taxpayers. De León also authored Proposition 68, to keep drinking water clean and open new parks throughout the state. As author of Proposition 2, he secured the largest financial investment to build permanent supportive housing for Californians experiencing homelessness, especially in Los Angeles.

He attended U.C. Santa Barbara and graduated from Pitzer College at the Claremont Colleges with honors.
